We are coordinating some fun things to see/do around Austin, spearheaded by one or more of the people at the conference.  These pages will be more populated in the next few weeks, so please check back to see new additions.  If you are interested in any of these, please contact the point person to coordinate.

For those of you venturing off on your own or with families, please feel free to contact the point people for info and/or current/recent Austinites.  Additionally, other recommendations from the various organizers can be found at these pages:

Austin Things-to-Do
Family-Friendly Activities

Saturday, May 26:

Running on Town Lake starting from Barton Springs
1078 Robert E. Lee Road   Austin, TX  78704
Time: 8 AM - before it gets too hot!
Point persons:
Angel Syrett ("Gelli") and Colin Cox ("Bunny")

We're running about 3 miles (5K) from Barton Springs in the morning before it gets too hot!   We'll be going at an easy pace, so no worries if you're out of practice.  Remember to pack your running shoes and appropriate clothing - Angel demands you bring your sassiness.  Come marvel at the 8th Wonder of the World and witness Colin voluntarily exercising.  After the run, we can cool off in the water and eat breakfast tacos and/or have coffee.

Rumor has it that the amazing Gwen ("Gwennie") Stovall may join in along with her tot-in-jogger, the handsome young Samuel. Come on out and see if it's more than just a rumor.

**Note: You need not have a nickname ending in an "ee" sound to join.

Breakfast at Central Market (4001 N. Lamar Blvd.)
Point Person: Tonia Symensma-Cohen is hoping to see some old IU friends, but all are invited!
Saturday morning, 9-10:30a. Kid-friendly (playground right there). We'll be outside after grabbing some food at the cafe!

Kidz 'N' Play
6100 Airport Blvd Suite B
Point person: Sara Stewart
An indoor inflatable playground for jumpy kids!

UT Rec Sports
Point Person:  Jorge Villafana
The University of Texas Rec Sports Center has a lot more to offer than just weights and workout gear:  an outdoor recreational pool (as well as an indoor and outdoor lap pool), squash, raquetball, table tennis, etc. etc.  Daily usage fee is $10.

Bats at Congress Avenue
Congress Avenue Bridge
Point person: ________
Austin is home to the largest urban colony of bats, which live under the CongressAvenue Bridge.  It’s actually quite remarkable to see (cue“Night on Bald Mountain”).   A lot of people like to stand on the bridge and look down, but I like to sit on the grass down below (don't stand directly underneath them!).  For approximate times of emergence, you can call the BatLine at 512-416-5700 ext. 3636.

Midnight movie at Alamo
320 E 6th Street, Austin, TX 78701     512-476-1320
Point Person:  Jamie Bacher (?)
The flagship theater of Alamo Drafthouse (no longer there) was my favorite theater ever.  I don’t even want to get
into all the great events they host there (though am more than happy to talk your ear off about it in person).  Basically, it’s a theater where you can eat (the pizza’s actually quite good) and drink beer or wine while you watch a movie.  A bucket of Schlitz, anyone? (they also have good beer).  They have since franchised, but they still host fun things.  The late movie on Memorial weekend is Fight Club, and the throwback movie is Rocky III.  The Master Pancake (mocks the movie) is Sound of Music.

Sunday, May 27:

Barton Springs Pool
Point Person:  Angel Syrett
Barton Springs is one of the more well-known Austin places to go to, especially when temperatures get pretty searing.  The pool is natural (you can often find crawdaddies in there) and spring-fed and remains a balmy 68 degrees year round.  Admission is probably $3, although it’s free before 9 am and after 9 pm.  The pool closes at 10 pm (though there are always reports of midnight skinny-dippers who sneak back in).  During the summer months, crowds come and sit on the grassy hills on either side (not unlike Seurat’s  “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande-Jatte”, fewer petticoats).  There’s often a drum circle and/or guitars.  Unfortunately, you aren’t allowed to bring food in.
If you didn’t want to pay and go into the pool proper, just downstream of the pool (and just upstream of the canoe rental) is what is called the “dog pool” at the Springs (since dogs aren’t allowed in the pool, they frolic here). A lot of people and their dogs come here to cool off from the trail.  A nice way to spend a hot morning/afternoon might consist of a walk around town lake (see hike/bike trail below), a jump in the springs or dog pool to cool off, and then lunch at nearby Shady Grove (which is actually walking distance to the Springs, and you can sit outside and drip dry). The entrance to the Greenbelt(see below) is near the Southern end of the parking area at the Springs.

Canoeing Town Lake
Zilker Park, just South of Barton Springs   512-478-3852
There are a couple places to rent canoes/kayaks near the hike/bike trail.  I like the one near Barton Springs (you can just jump into the Dog pool afterwards and or head for Shady Grove), but the other one is ok, too.  Rentals will be somewhere around $10/hr.  If you have Sarah, Angel or Eric in your group, have them show you the rope swings.

Schlitterbahan
Point Person:  Sue Lato (susan.lato@gmail.com)
Just an hour South of Austin, Schlitterbahn is a whole bunch of water park ridiculousness and fun to beat the Texas heat.

80's dancing at Elysium (http://www.elysiumonline.net/)
Point Person: Jorge Villafana (ellingtonadmin@gmail.com)
Enjoy a last hoorah toward the end. The plan would be to arrive at about 11P or so, when the party starts bumpin!

Monday, May 28:

Breakfast expedition
Point Person: Jorge Villafana (ellingtonadmin@gmail.com)
10A brunch on Monday morning as well, I think that we agreed on Taco Joint next to Sao Paulo's on San Jacinto: http://www.yelp.com/biz/taco-joint-austin-2

Any/All day:

Crown & Anchor
Probably the main watering hole for Ellingtonians in Texas, the Crown & Anchor is an English-style pub (in the American sense, not in the Imperial College sense) just North of campus.  There is no point person for this event as most of the 'buddies' will eventually end up there.  Feel free to join in - there will be a lot of drunken science yap going on.
